The Planet Earth-observation company has just released new imagery of the broken Milne Ice Shelf in the Arctic. The collapse of the Milne Ice Shelf mirrors what’s been happening on the other side of the Earth in Antarctica, where a handful of high profile ice shelves have collapsed since the 1990s and glaciers are thinning at an alarming rate. The Milne Ice Shelf, located on #EllesmereIsland in #Nunavut, has now reduced in area by ~43%. The imagery was acquired on 26 July ("before") and 31 July ("after"). Milne itself now measures only 106 sq km. Further break-up events in 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011 and 2012, and now in 2020, mean the shelf area is currently under 500 sq km. The presence of such liquid water can be problematic for ice platforms. The 4,000-year-old Milne Ice Shelf, located at the edge of Ellesmere Island in the northern territory of Nunavut, collapsed at the end of last month, researchers announced this week. The Milne Ice Shelf, a 4,000 years old shelf is a fragment of the former Ellesmere Ice Shelf, located in the Qikiqtaaluk Region, Nunavut, Canada. The Canadian Ice Service will monitor the remaining ice shelves and track these ice islands, especially if they drift further south where they can pose a hazard to oil rigs and ships. The Milne Ice Shelf, a fragment of the former Ellesmere Ice Shelf, is located in the Qikiqtaaluk Region, Nunavut, Canada. It is the second largest ice shelf in the Arctic Ocean.Situated on the north-west coast of Ellesmere Island, it is located about 270 km (170 mi) west of Alert, Nunavut. A huge section of the Milne Ice Shelf, located on Ellesmere Island in the northern Canadian territory of Nunavut, collapsed into the Arctic Ocean, according to the Canadian Ice Service. By Jonathan AmosBBC Science Correspondent. Warwick Vincent, a biology professor at Laval University who has worked in the Arctic for more than two decades, say such dramatic changes point to the need for greater protection for parts of the Arctic that will be the last to hold on to sea ice as the world warms. The Milne ice shelf, which is situated in Tuvaijuittuq, is now adrift. "Above-normal air temperatures, offshore winds and open water in front of the ice shelf are all part of the recipe for ice shelf break up," according to the Canadian Ice Service. The Milne Ice Shelf on Nunavut's Ellesmere Island, said to be the last intact shelf in Canada, has collapsed, according to observers. Ellesmere Island was once bounded by extensive shelves that had melded into a single structure. Canada’s 4,000-year-old Milne Ice Shelf on the northwestern edge of Ellesmere Island had been the country’s last intact ice shelf until the end of July when ice analyst Adrienne White of the Canadian Ice Service noticed that satellite photos showed that about 43% of it had broken off. The Milne ice shelf, which is situated in the Tuvaijuittuq marine protected area, is now adrift. The Milne Ice Shelf is at the edge of Ellesmere Island, in the far northern Canadian territory of Nunavut. The Milne Ice Shelf was thicker than other ice shelves, so the newly broken-off ice islands are 70 to 80 metres thick. These large calving events can also create hazards for the shipping industry by creating essentially large icebergs floating across the northern oceans. The collapse occurred on July 30 and 31, reducing the last fully intact ice shelf in Canada by 43%. According to Copland, the Arctic has been warming at twice the global rate over the past 30 years, and this process is known as Arctic amplification. Milne Ice Shelf was Canada's last intact ice shelf — and it just collapsed. Located on the northern margin of Canada's Ellesmere Island, the ice platform split on 30/31 July to form a free-floating bloc some 80 sq km (30 sq miles) in area. Looking north along a rift in the Milne Ice shelf. This large sheet of ice then drifted into the Arctic Sea, further breaking into two large chunks. On July 30 and July 31, the northern part of the Arctic ice shelf began to break off. #MilneIceIsland #Nunavut #seaice pic.twitter.com/fGfj8Me9tA.
